News – 2023

10 January 2023

Tonight we started a Couch to 5K course for a lovely group of new and returning runners. Around 17 intrepid participants braved horrendous conditions to get to club for the start, although the weather magically improved as the clock struck 7pm.  Good luck to everyone taking part, and particular thanks to David Rutter and Lucy MacDonald who are fronting the course, and for all the helpers that they’ll get over the 9 weeks.  Sian and Bernie taking that role this week.

Welcome to a new year!

Let’s start with a GLCL race report submitted to the Beacon today…  It doesn’t fully express the fantastic effort that the whole club put in to putting on this race.  Well done us!

Spirit of Monmouth Running Club played host to the second GLCL cross-country league race of the season on Sunday (8th Jan), using a fantastic Penallt course, again by kind permission of Tim and Sarah at Humble by Nature.

Torrential rain had left the fields soggy, with standing water in places, which soon turned into sporadic patches of deep mud as 214 runners from the nine clubs powered along the 4.5 mile course. It really was challenging but, deep down, it was great fun – with plenty of smiles (at the end!) and a great hubbub in the Pig & Apple where many warmed up with coffee and cake.

Three very classy Parc Bryn Bach runners took the top 3 places but 15 Spirits put in some very good and determined performances too, with the Ladies’ team finishing in an excellent fourth place.  The men’s team not quite as successful – but didn’t finish last! Well done to Katie Adams, Lucy MacDonald and Brian Evans who were the first 3 Spirits to finish but there were plenty of great performances from individuals right through the field.  A great friendly event, and thanks to all the members, family and friends who gave time to marshal the event.

Some pictures – and the actual published report (which is an amalgamation of the above plus reporting from other clubs) can be found on the Beacon website here
