Our History

The rich history of the Spirit of Monmouth Running Club is a testament to the vision and dedication of its founders, Mark Harrison, a Marketing Consultant, and Sian Stroud, an Estate Agent. Their shared passion for running, combined with a deep appreciation for Monmouth’s natural beauty and tight-knit community, ignited the spark that led to the club’s inception.

In the summer of 2008, fueled by their belief that Monmouth was ripe for a running community to flourish, Mark and Sian took the bold step of approaching the Monmouth School Sports Club. Their proposal was met with resounding support and excitement, setting the stage for what would become a transformative journey for countless individuals.

The inaugural gathering of the Spirit of Monmouth Running Club exceeded all expectations, drawing an impressive turnout of 40 eager runners. From that moment forward, the club’s trajectory was marked by steady growth and unwavering commitment. Today, boasting a membership of over 100, the club stands as a beacon of camaraderie and athletic excellence within the Monmouth community.

At the heart of the Spirit of Monmouth lies a commitment to embodying the very essence of its namesake town. Every run, every event, and every interaction is infused with the spirit of unity, encouragement, and support that defines Monmouth’s unique character.

More than just a running club, the Spirit of Monmouth is a vibrant community where individuals of all backgrounds and abilities come together to train, compete, and forge lasting friendships. Newcomers are welcomed with open arms, embraced by a culture that values inclusion and celebrates the shared pursuit of health, wellness, and personal achievement.

As the club continues to evolve and thrive, its members remain steadfast in their dedication to upholding the principles upon which it was founded. Through their unwavering commitment to each other and to the spirit of Monmouth itself, they ensure that the legacy of the Spirit of Monmouth Running Club endures as a shining example of the transformative power of community and collective endeavor.
