On Tuesday May 23rd, the second Gwent Leisure Centre League road race of the season took place near Caerleon. Spirit of Monmouth fielded a record 37-strong team in the event. The first runner home for the club was Allan Meek, who finished 25th overall, in a field of over 500 runners, also winning his age category. John Jenkins also won his age category. Laura Grey was the first lady home for the club, placing 8th in her age category. Jane Beresford was next Spirit lady to finish, placing 2nd in her age category.
On Thursday May 25th, seven Spirit of Monmouth runners took part in the Fountain Five, a hilly 5-mile trail race at Parkend in the Forest of Dean. Martin Blakebrough was the fastest runner for the club, finishing in 42 minutes 3 seconds. Emma King was the fastest lady, finishing in 44 minutes 54 seconds.
Tony Hardy took part in the Liverpool Rock n Roll Marathon on Sunday May 28th, completing the 26.2 miles in 5 hours 56 minutes.
In their third race of the week, Martin Blakebrough and Jeremy Creasey represented the club at the Treforest 10k on Sunday 28th, finishing in 46 minutes 33 seconds and 47 minutes 41 seconds respectively.

Opening GLCL Road Race at Parc Bryn Bach, Hereford 5k, Bristol 10k, Shakespeare Marathon, Bluebell Blunder
The first race of the 2017 Gwent Leisure Centre League Road Race Series took place on Tuesday May 2nd at Parc Bryn Bach, Tredegar. A team of 32 Spirit of Monmouth runners took part in the 6-mile race.
Alice Taylor was the first runner home for the club, finishing in 21st position of more than 500 competitors, as 2nd female and 1st senior female. Allan Meek was the first man home for the club, placing 2nd in his age category. Jane Beresford finished 2nd in her age category and John Jenkins placed 1st in his. After the first race of five, the ladies’ team is in 5th place and the men’s team is in 7th place.
On Wednesday 3rd May, Alice Taylor won the Hereford 5km series for the second time – in a time of 18 minutes and 20 seconds.
On Sunday 7th May, Karen Barratt took part in the Shakespeare Marathon in Stratford-on-Avon. In warm conditions, Karen completed the 26.2-mile course in 4 hours and 17 minutes. Emma King participated in the Half-Marathon event and achieved a time of 1 hour 47 minutes.
In The Bristol 10k, David Mather achieved his best time in recent years – 42 minutes 55 seconds. Rhian Chapman completed the race in 58 minutes 22. Julia Davis gained a new 10km personal best time of 1 hour 3 minutes in the race.
Sally Gilson and Vinny Duffin took part in the Bluebell Blunder, a hilly and scenic 10km trail race along Offa’s Dyke and the Wye Valley. They finished the race in 1 hour 23 minutes.

Spirit of Monmouth Hosts GLCL XC at Humble by Nature, Penallt
On Sunday January 8th, more than 300 runners from ten running clubs across Gwent took part in a Gwent Leisure Centre League Cross-Country race, hosted by Spirit of Monmouth Running Club, at Humble by Nature in Penallt.
Ladies completed three laps of the 1.4-mile course through the scenic farmland, while the men completed four laps.
Emma Wookey of Lliswerry running club won the ladies’ race and Duncan Bell of Chepstow Harriers won the men’s race.
Laura Grey was the first lady home for Spirit of Monmouth, finishing 4th in her age category and 22nd lady overall. Jane Beresford was next, placing 2nd in her age category. Nerys Chaplin and Emma King completed the ladies’ A team, which finished in 5th place.
The first man home for Spirit of Monmouth was Gareth Jones, who finished 3rd in his age category and 5th overall. Warren Hulsen was next, placing 9thin his age category. Brian Evans was the third man home for the club, finishing 7th in his age category. Jeremy Masters, Russell Finch and Kirk Hill completed the men’s A team, which finished in 6th place.
